Nowadays, a water cooler dispenser is a must for every home and office due to its versatility and valuable use. It is also much cheaper to maintain one than installing a bottle-less dispenser, also called POU, which requires you to build your own filtration and compressor systems.
Whether you have a hot and cold water cooler dispenser or just a plain dispenser, keeping it clean and hygienic every time will provide great-tasting water for the whole family. It will also prevent water-borne diseases and avoid a threat to everyone’s health and well-being.
This article will focus on cleaning a top-loading water cooler for home or for the office. Luckily, if you have a self-cleaning unit, which usually comes with a bottom loading bottle reservoir, you may end up doing the task easier and quicker.
Cleaning a water cooler with self-cleaning feature
Just like any other appliance in your home, cleaning your water cooler periodically is also advisable to maintain the sanitary condition of the machine in dispensing hot or cold water. But how about a self-cleaning unit?
A self-cleaning water dispenser is a cooler unit with a self-cleaning switch at the rear part of the device. You just have to look for a switch with the word “In” written beside it. Press this button and hold on to it for about 5 seconds before you release it.
Releasing the button will activate the self-cleaning cycle of the dispenser. The process of self-cleaning will take about 1 to 1.5 hours, after that, a LED indicator (usually colored green) on the machine’s left part will blink. This indicates that the process of self-cleaning is finished.
Some best water dispensers with a self-cleaning feature are usually equipped with UV light, powerful filter or ozone generator. This ozone device generates tiny ozone bubbles into the water cooler reservoir which oxidize and kill all microbes, molds, and other organic matter.
How often should you clean your water dispenser?
Most manufacturers recommend cleaning your water dispenser every 3 to 6 months for non-self-cleaning units. However, the best time to clean your water dispenser is when your existing water bottle is empty so you could enjoy a new bottle after completing the cleaning process.
For self-cleaning units, you can do the procedure once a week or as recommended by the manufacturer. We strongly suggest that you do this at night when everyone is sleeping so no one accidentally gets water from it.
For a top loading water dispenser without a self-cleaning feature; we shall demonstrate cleaning a Primo water cooler since this product is one of the world’s leading brands. Here it goes!

Step 1: Turn of the hot water heating coil then putting the switch off at the back of the dispenser. Then unplugged your water cooler from the electrical outlet to avoid any untoward incident.
Step 2: Then, remove the empty bottle of water followed by the water dispenser support collar (if you have one on your unit). Remove the air filter from the support collar, then set aside.
Step 3: Then, remove the baffle inside the reservoir and set it aside. Please take note of the baffle position before you remove it so you could insert it correctly after the cleaning process.

Never use soap, steel wool, cleaning fluid, and other abrasive materials to clean your dispenser to avoid damage to the unit. Then, clean the baffle and other removable parts either in a dishwasher or with soap and warm water.
Step 6: Drain the water from the cold faucet of the dispenser completely by pushing down the button or the spigot lever. Then, refill the reservoir with the other half gallon of clean boiled water and let it sit for 5 minutes. Wipe off the exterior of the dispenser using a damp clean soft cloth including the faucets or spigots.
Step 7: Completely drain the boiled water from the reservoir through the cold faucet. Then, put back the cleaned baffle into the hole of the base of the reservoir and other detachable that you have cleaned previously.
Step 8: If everything is reassembled, wipe off the support collar with a damp clean soft cloth before you place a new bottle of water on the top of the cooler. Then, plug the electrical cord and flip on the hot water switch on the back of the dispenser.
In less than an hour, you can enjoy another batch of hot or cold water in time for your favorite coffee or juice.
